Art
This event showcased readings by Natasha Solomons from her latest book Mr. Rosenblum’s List.

Food
Concept-Chef Caroline Hobkinson re-created a five course multi-sensory experience by evoking memories of Jack and Sadie’s journey in the book. Caroline’s menu is a wonderfully poetic toast to personal journey, struggle and food assimilation.

Caroline’s life in both Berlin and London has influenced her unique take on food, history and art. She uses food as performance and social commentary, drawing inspiration from the likes of Judy Chicago and the Futurist Cookbook. Trained at Central Saint Martin’s, one of Caroline’s past projects includes an underground restaurant in Berlin to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Upcoming projects also include a very Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at the Barbican and BRoKen BiScuits, a gastro-geographical journey through Shoreditch. Caroline’s work has been featured by the New York Times and Die Zeit.

Drink
For this event, we worked with Red, White or Pink to provide a selection of German wines to match the food and the story.

Art
An evening of ‘chic English hedonism’ as told by Orange Prize award-winning author Naomi Alderman.

Food
The menu was inspired by Naomi Alderman’s The Lessons, a novel about gilded youth set in a stilted Oxford backdrop and the relationships they have with affluence, addiction, and power.

Visiting chef Dain Lee lives life in New York as a lyrical dreamscape of food and music. Mixing flavor profiles with a global perspective, the results are fresh, cheeky, and always unconventional. His dishes are deceptively simple, but have a depth and complexity that can only come from someone who understands both the power of an individual note as well as how they fit together to form a symphony.

Drink
5 specially selected rare wines were chosen by Dawid Koeglenberg, former General Manager of Corrigans Mayfair. He has more than 20 years experience in hospitality, vine growing and wine making. He is a qualified lecturer for the Wine & Spirit Trust and also lectures for the London Wine Academy. Dawid is a judge at the international wine & spirit competition in London and talks on BBC radio about wine.

An excerpt from Mr. Rosenblum’s List:

Jack Rosenblum is five foot three and a half inches of sheer tenacity and through study and application he intends to become a Very English Gentleman.

Jack is compiling a list: a comprehensive guide to the manners, customs and habits of England. He knows that marmalade must be bought from Fortnum & Mason, he’s memorised every British monarch back to 913 A.D. and the highlight of his day is the BBC weather forecast. And he never speaks German, apart from the occasional curse.

From the moment he disembarked at Harwich in 1937 he understood that assimilation was the key. But the war’s been over for eight years and despite his best efforts, his bid to blend in remains fraught with unexpected hurdles. Including his wife.

Sadie finds his obsession baffling. She doesn’t want to forget who they are or where they came from. She’d rather bake cakes to remember the people they left behind than worry about how to play tennis.

But Jack is convinced they can find a place to call home. In a final attempt to complete his list, he leads a reluctant Sadie deep into the English countryside. Here, in a land of woolly pigs, bluebells and jitterbug cider, they embark on an impossible task….

Testimonial – Naomi Alderman http://www.number68project.com/2011/01/testimonial-naomi-alderman/ http://www.number68project.com/2011/01/testimonial-naomi-alderman/#comments Thu, 06 Jan 2011 08:22:27 +0000 Number 68 Project http://www.number68project.com/?p=378

Naomi talks about Number 68 Project and The Lessons:

“The Lessons is a novel of excess, of the dangers and seductive pleasures of having too much, wanting too much, longing for things that can never be ours. Set in Oxford in the 1990s, it charts the fortunes of a group of friends who gather around the mercurial and very wealthy Mark Winters in his crumbling Georgian mansion. Desire abounds, as does ambition, betrayal and, in the end, tragedy. It’s been called “a dark spell of a book”, “a compulsive pleasure” and “very hot”… which was pretty much what I was going for.

Where could be better to celebrate The Lessons than at the Number 68 Project? Number 68 is a glorious homage to the days when people dressed for dinner, brought bang up to date with food that plays with the classics, wines that surprise and delight and an ambience of chic hedonism. I loved Number 68 the first time I came through its doors and it just keeps on getting better. It’s an honour to take part.”
